Ontario Staycation Tax Credit
Take advantage of the Ontario government temporary tax credit for 2022! The staycation offer is meant to encourage Ontario families to explore the province while assisting the hospitality and tourism sector to recover.
How does it work?
Ontario residents can claim 20% of their eligible 2022 accommodation expenses. For example, when you are filing your personal Income Tax and Benefit Return for 2022, you are able to claim eligible expenses of up to $1,000 as an individual. It increases if you have a spouse, common-law partner, and or eligible children.
Who is eligible:
You must be an Ontario resident on December 31st, 2022. Only one individual per family can claim the credit for the year.
You can claim the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit for accommodation expenses for a leisure stay of less than one month at a short-term accommodation such as a hotel. The tax credit only applies to leisure stays between January 1, 2022, and December 31st, 2022. The tax credit does not apply to business travel.
How to claim the credit.
Keep detailed receipts for any eligible expenses. Your information should include the location of the accommodation, the accommodation portion of the stay, GST/HST paid, date of stay, and name of the payor.
