Konzelmann Estate Winery
Think green and blue, when you think of a visit to Konzelmann Estate Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
It’s just a short, scenic drive north from Niagara Falls along the Niagara Parkway, and before long you’re into grape and wine country, some of the lushest farmland in Canada.
Good winemakers in Niagara understand the climate – or climates because there are several here based on terrain and season and the deep Lake Ontario.
Konzelmann Estate Winery was re-established here by Herbert Konzelmann in 1984 after he arrived from Stuttgart, Germany. His family had been making wine in Germany since 1893 so their product, you could say, is the result of four generations of accumulated oenology skills.
Today it boasts more than 30 VQA selections of wine to sample and buy and if you’re going to visit, set aside a whole day to take it all in.
Konzelmann, with its castle-like home building overlooking Lake Ontario surrounded by rows upon rows of grapevines, bills itself as Niagara’s only lakefront winery. It has the look of a romantic movie setting, and a stop there really does make you feel that you’ve gotten away from it all for a time.
Ways to Enjoy Your Trip:
For starters, there is the Vineyard Safari where they take you on a cart ride through the vineyard that overlooks the Lake Ontario shoreline and, on a clear day, the Toronto horizon in the distance.
You’ll also take a walk through their production facility to learn how it all comes together, and then enjoy a tasting of four wines.
Konzelmann also offers a public VIP tour where you’ll learn about the history of the family while inspecting the beautiful grounds of the winery, ending, of course with a sampling of the magnificent product itself.
There’s also the junk food tour and tasting – a sort of beauty and the beast, pairing a Konzelmann wine with some of your favourite junk foods. It works!
On weekends you can also tour through the cellars themselves, and also try a blind tasting experience.
Konzelmann Estate Winery is at 1096 Lakeshore Rd. in Niagara-on-the-Lake, less than a half-hour drive from the Table Rock Welcome Centre at the brink of Niagara Falls and are part of our Wine Tour Package. (Please note that our Wine Tour Package has been cancelled for 2020 due to Covid Regulations)
